The project to refresh the Model 3 or Model 3 Highland has been completed and was launched not long ago, bringing customers a series of designs in terms of overall performance but that is not enough to meet expectations. Our wait is for a more practical one for family trips, the Model Y. So what is the big change in Model Y efficiency? Recently, Tesla did a bit of a surprise update to the model y so what Tesla did in China was to bring a slight change to the range and acceleration of the Model Y. We call this a minor change because we can find very little that has changed. However, it makes quite a difference when it comes to 0-60 mile acceleration. In the previous version of the standard variant, the time to 60 miles was 6.9 seconds according to estimates in China. The updated version has reduced the time to 5.9 seconds, 1 second being the amount of time that has shown to be a huge difference. In the case of the rear-wheel drive Model Y, the estimated range is 344 miles (554 km), an increase of 5 miles (9 km), almost 1.7% more than the previous model. For the dual-motor all-wheel drive long-range version, the estimated range has increased from 410 miles to 428 miles, an increase of 18 miles over the previous version. Since we don't see that the Model Y has too many changes to the exterior design to increase aerodynamics, we can consider that Tesla seems to have had a bit of an impact on the Model Y's battery cell, with The supply is extremely abundant in the Chinese market especially from manufacturer CATL, which could be just a slight change in the battery's structure or improvements in their software. But nonetheless, this also shows a breakthrough in Tesla's production process in terms of increasing operating range, which are difficulties that other electric vehicle manufacturers are considering to optimize. It is a fact that to achieve a time to 60 mph that is up to 1 second shorter, the power that the Model Y standard range must add is about 60-100 horsepower in the rear-wheel drive. Tesla unexpectedly released a brand new Model Y Trim available in North America. The Tesla Model Y lineup has had a number of shakeups since its launch back in 2020, and of all the changes we have seen, the lowest trim offering has been impacted the most. Tesla originally launched the Model Y with only the LR AWD and the Performance delivering to customers. The originally planned Model Y SR RWD never ended up delivering before reportedly being cancelled. But then Tesla released the so called Standard Range Model Y in a RWD configuration that came in at $41,990. This new RWD SR Model Y came in with 244 miles of range, RWD, but otherwise, included all the same features of the premium interior found on the Model Y LR AWD and the Performance. The price subsequently dropped to $39,990 before going back up and all the way to $43,990 before being cancelled all together. After starting operations in Giga Texas, Tesla released a brand new Tesla Model Y, which some referred to as the Standard Range Model Y. The Model Y SR, or really the Model Y AWD, came in at 279 miles of range, AWD, same interior as the LR and P, but featured the brand new 4680 battery cells. This model has been available to order for about a year, but was unexpectedly removed from the order configurator just recently. You can no longer order or receive the Model Y AWD. Now, it appears seeing the production line start spitting out Model Y's at Giga Texas once again, these would seem to be the new Model Y RWD. This new option would seem to feature the same LFP battery pack found in the Model 3 RWD, at least based on the limited documentation available on the EPA repository. The EPA certifications list a Model Y RWD as having the same 350 Volt architecture and 174 Energy density, leading to the same battery pack, at least on paper. So we should get a glimpse at this significantly cheaper Model Y any time now as customer orders begin this month. Until we see for sure, we can only assume that this will be a strong selling Tesla Model Y trim. We took delivery of our Tesla Model Y back in May of 2021. This was our second Model Y as we had originally taken delivery of one of the first 3k Model Y's built back in 2020. When the 7 passenger option started delivering, that is when we switched to the Model Y we have today. Along with a fresh interior update, the Model Y came with a larger battery. This was of course on top of adding the 7 seat option, which we would use from time to time with multiple adults and our 2 children in the car. This combined with the impressive storage space in the Model Y makes it one of the best cars to consider. Don't just take my word for it, the Model Y was the best selling car of any fuel several times this year, throughout the entire world. We have surpassed 50k miles on our Tesla Model Y and there is a lot to talk about. In this video I will review the costs, wear and tear, battery degradation, autopilot, FSD, overall pros and cons and wrap it up with final thoughts following this 50k miles. The hard thing to explain to people is just how much cheaper it is to operate an electric car. Because EV's usually come with a higher price tag than their gas equivalent, it takes a shift in thinking for the average consumer to understand. When factoring in the maintenance and fuel costs, an electric car can save substantial money. In this last 50k miles, degradation of the battery has been as much on my mind as it is many. That said, the battery has seemed to really settle in at the 10% mark. When I took delivery, the BMS read 79 kWh nominal. At this time, that is now reading 71 kWh nominal. This 10% reduction seems to be pretty good considering that over half of the lifetime charging on this car was on a supercharger. Autopilot and FSD continue to make progress. The good news is that in this last year, FSD and Autopilot have improved at a much faster rate than the previous year. Phantom braking does still happen, but it is much more rare these days compared to a nearly daily occurrence last year. FSD, while not ready for wide release in my area, has made pretty significant improvements over the last year also. Overall, this car hits a lot of the marks. It executes in ways that other EV's are not able to. The Model Y is the best balance of price, range, space, performance and comfort. Add on top of that the qualification for the $7,500 EV Tax Credit, this Tesla Model Y is going to be hard to beat. If your budget is somewhere close to the average new car price in America, there is no other car you should be looking at as the Model Y is the BEST all around EV on the road today.
